The project, curated by Giorgio Maffei and Emanuele De Donno, has been concieved as a progressive itinerary of permanent study on the evolution of the phenomenon of artist’s books; a platform of events with exhibitions and workshops on artist’s books involving italian and international artists and publishers. The project examined specific aspects of the issue and also created a dibate, including a broader audience through collateral events (educational programs, consultations of books, forum, workshops, concerts, live sets, live printings).
The outputs have been three main exhibitions and a book. Besides the exhibition, there were moments of study and research and comparison between cultural operators, curators, publishers and artists on the themes suggested by the exhibition, including those related to preservation criteria for archiving and promoting the artist’s book in museums, funds, public and private collections and libraries. The operation focused on three thematic sections INbook (archiviations and actions in the contemporary artist’s book), OUTbook (moltiplication and digression in the contemporary artist’s book) and IFbook (the artist’s book and its infinite hypothesis).
INbookOUTbookIFbook  is a longitudinal and transverse study, which has been divided in three steps to explore the artist publishing researches.
It is a dialogue ground for operators of contemproary artist’s book, which is concieved as a functional, technical medium, an ‘eperimental room’, an anteroom, a neutral ground.
The exhibition events, the workshops, the catalogue and the staging structures have been concieved as a support-platform facing with similar researches, which worl out the book interface and transmission with interactive approaches (Support structures, collaborative Celine Condorelli, Conversations 2003, allestimento-piattaforma di Allen Ruppersberg ispirato ad un libro manuale del ’42, Kiosk-modes of moltiplication, vasta operazione di diffusione creativa dell’editoria indipendente, The Violence of Participation, installazione pubblic/azione interattiva e critica di Markus Miessen).
This study uses no theoretical definition, but activates empirically a workshop of book creation, with usable consultation stations, shared devices and direct exchanges with the artist/publisher involved in the operation.

Il progetto, curato da Giorgio Maffei ed Emanuele De Donno, è stato concepito come un percorso progessivo di studio permanente sull’evoluzione del fenomeno libro d’artista; una piattaforma di eventi con mostre e workshop sul libro d’artista che ha incluso artisti ed editori italiani ed internazionali. Il progetto ha esaminato aspetti specifici della tematica e ha animato il dibattito, includendo un pubblico più vasto tramite eventi collaterali (programmi di didattica, consultazione di libri, forum, workshop, concerti, live set, live printing).
L’operazione ha prodotto tre mostre principali ed un libro. Oltre alle sezioni espositive, ci sono stati momenti di studio e ricerca e confronto tra operatori, curatori, editori e artisti sui temi suggeriti dalle mostre, inclusi quelli relativi alla conservazione e ai criteri di archiviazione e promozione del libro d’artista in musei, fondazioni, collezioni e biblioteche pubbliche e private. L’operazione si è concentrata su tre sezioni tematiche: INbook (archiviazioni e azioni nel libro d’artista contemporaneo), OUTbook (moltiplicazione e digressione nel libro d’artista contemporaneo) e IFbook (il libro d’artiste e le sue infinite ipotesi).
INbookOUTbookIFbook è un percorso di studio a tre tappe, longitudinale e trasversale per indagare le ricerche editoriali d’artista.
È un terreno di dialogo tra operatori del libro d’artista contemporaneo concepito come un edium tecnico operativo, un experimental room, una anticamera, un terreno neutro. Gli eventi espositivi, i laboratori, il catalogo, le strutture di allestimento infatti sono stati pensati come un supporto-piattaforma che si cinfronta con ricerche analoghe che risolvono con approcci interattivi e dinamici l’interfaccia e la trasmissione del libro (Support structures, progetto collaborazione collaborativa di Celine Condorelli, Conversations 2003, allestimento-piattaforma di Allen Ruppersberg ispirato ad un libro manuale del ’42, Kiosk-modes of moltiplication, vasta operazione di diffusione creativa dell’editoria indipendente, The Violence of Participation, installazione pubblic/azione interattiva e critica di Markus Miessen). In tal modo non ci si affida a nessuna definizione teoretica ma si attiva empiricamente un laboratorio del fare libro, con stazioni praticabili di consultazione, dispositivi condivisi e scambio diretto con l’artista/editore coinvolto nell’operazione.
