The Map is not the Territory (Montedellarte) is an artist’s book, a video and an installation visualising the artistic result and process of Montedellarte.
People sometimes confuse the representation of reality with reality itself. The mapping of a territory, therefore, does not constitute the actual territory. Despite our best efforts to control the world around us, we often fail. Perception does not always coincide with reality.
On 1 October 2017, Belgian artist Griet Dobbels produced the art happening Montedellarte on Monte Cucco in Biella. A group of hikers drew a physical map in the landscape by walking along a contour line. People from all over the world could watch and participate in the hike via the project website and app.
The artist’s book takes the form of a layered geographical map and is an attempt to control the chaos of the process through intensive mapping. The installation consists of two light boxes and is conceived as a 3D presentation of the artist’s book. The video is a compilation of the footage recorded during the art happening and the photographs taken by the hikers while walking along the contour line. Slowly but surely, the landscape is revealed.

La mappa non è il territorio (Montedellarte) è un libro d’artista, un video e un’installazione che visualizzano il processo e il risultato artistico di Montedellarte.
Le persone a volte confondono la rappresentazione della realtà con la realtà stessa. La mappatura di un territorio non costituisce quindi il territorio reale. Nonostante i nostri sforzi per controllare il mondo intorno a noi, spesso falliamo. La percezione non sempre coincide con la realtà.
Il 1° ottobre 2017, l’artista belga Griet Dobbels ha realizzato l’evento artistico chiamato Montedellarte sul Monte Cucco, vicino a Biella. Un gruppo di escursionisti ha fisicamente tracciato una mappa nel paesaggio camminando lungo una curva di livello. Persone da ogni parte del mondo hanno potuto guardare e partecipare all’escursione attraverso il sito online e l’app.
Il libro d’artista prende la forma di una mappa geografica stratificata ed è un tentativo di controllare il caos del processo attraverso un’azione di mappatura intensiva. L’installazione consiste in due piani luminosi ed è concepita come presentazione tridimensionale del libro d’artista. Il video è una compilation di spezzoni delle riprese dell’evento e fotografie scattate dagli escursionisti mentre camminavano lungo la linea di livello. Lentamente ma indubbiamente, il paesaggio viene rivelato.
